Stone Courtyard Housing, Mardin
A contemporary 36-home settlement built in local stone with a courtyard layout.
Stone Courtyard Housing, on a plot next to Mardin's historic fabric, translates traditional courtyard houses into a contemporary housing language. The 36 homes are gathered around twelve courtyards linked by narrow streets.
Design approach
The building stone came from a local quarry and was dressed by local masters without altering their methods. Thick stone walls and shaded courtyards halved the need for mechanical cooling in summer heat exceeding 40 degrees.
