İstasyon Meydanı, Konya
A city square in front of the train station prioritizing pedestrians and shade.
İstasyon Meydanı transformed a 4.2 hectare area that used to be a car park and traffic junction into a public space dedicated to pedestrians and shade. The water channel in the middle of the square refers to the city's irrigation culture.
Design approach
Some 280 trees were planted, and 45 percent of the paved surface is permeable material. Taxi and bus stops were moved to the edge of the square, making pedestrian flow uninterrupted. The square is used by 35,000 people a day.
